Forming the Perfect Passive

Example: laudātus est = "he was praised / he has been praised." The participle laudātus agrees with a masculine singular subject; for feminine use laudāta est, for neuter laudātum est.

The form of esse changes based on the tense you need. For the perfect passive, use present-tense forms of esse (est, sunt, etc.). For the pluperfect passive, use imperfect forms of esse (erat, erant, etc.). For the future perfect passive, use future forms of esse (erit, erunt, etc.).

Perfect Stems Across the Four Conjugations

While the present system is neatly organized by conjugation (1st through 4th), the perfect system is much less predictable. Some verbs form their perfect stems with a -v- or -u- suffix, others use reduplication (repeating the first consonant), others lengthen the stem vowel, and still others show a completely different stem with no obvious pattern. This is why memorizing principal parts is essential — you simply cannot always predict the perfect stem from the present stem.

Notice that the same stem mīs- appears in both columns for the active forms, and the same participle missus appears in both columns for the passive forms.
