People have always noticed that places change. That means things do not stay the same.

Long ago, people looked at the world around them. They asked, "Why did this place change?" They used their eyes and ears to find out!

A Playground Before and After a Storm

Let's look at our anchoring phenomenon! A big rainstorm came to a playground. Let's see what happened.

Look at the two pictures! On the left, the playground is neat. On the right, after the storm, there is mud, a broken branch, and sand spread around. These are evidence of change!

What clues do you see? The mud puddle tells us it rained. The broken branch tells us the wind was strong. We can use these clues as evidence to explain what happened!

How Do We Use Evidence?

Scientists follow steps to use evidence. You can do this too! Here is how it works.

Three Steps to Be an Earth Detective

  1. Step 1: Observe. That means look very carefully. Use your eyes! What do you see that is different?
  2. Step 2: Find evidence. That means find clues. What tells you that a change happened?
  3. Step 3: Explain. That means tell what happened and WHY. Use your clues to tell the story!
Follow the arrows! First you observe, then you find evidence, then you explain what happened.

This is what real scientists do! They look, they find clues, and then they explain. You can do it too!

Different Kinds of Changes to Our Earth
