People have been looking at shapes for a very, very long time! Long ago, people noticed that some things are flat, like a drawing on a cave wall. Other things are solid, like a rock you can hold. People wanted to give names to all these shapes so they could talk about them!

What Are 2D and 3D Shapes?

Every shape you see is either two-dimensional or three-dimensional. We say "2D" for short when we mean two-dimensional, and "3D" for short when we mean three-dimensional. A 2D shape is flat, like a picture on paper. A 3D shape is solid, like a toy you can pick up.

2D Means Flat

A 2D shape lies flat on a table. You can draw it on paper. It has length and width but no thickness.

A 3D shape takes up space. You can hold it in your hand. It has length, width, and height.

Look at the picture above. The shapes on the left are all flat. They look like drawings. You could trace them on a piece of paper. The shapes on the right look solid. They have extra lines that make them look thick. A ball is a sphere. A box is a cube. An ice cream cone is a cone shape!

How to Tell 2D from 3D

Here is an easy way to decide if a shape is 2D or 3D. You can ask yourself three simple questions!

The Three Questions

  1. Question 1: Is the shape flat like a drawing, or can I pick it up?
  2. Question 2: Does the shape have thickness? Can I see a top, a bottom, and sides?
  3. Question 3: Could I stack something on top of it?

If the shape is flat and has no thickness, it is a 2D shape. If the shape is solid and has thickness, it is a 3D shape.

The "D" in 2D and 3D stands for dimensional. A dimension is a direction you can measure. Flat shapes have 2 directions: across and up-down. Solid shapes have 3 directions: across, up-down, and in-and-out!

Shape Families: 2D and 3D Partners

Did you know that every 3D shape has a 2D shape hiding on it? When you look at the face of a 3D shape, you see a flat 2D shape! A face is the flat side of a solid shape. For example, the face of a cube is a square. The face of a cylinder is a circle.

This diagram shows how each 2D shape has a 3D partner. A circle becomes a sphere. A square becomes a cube. A triangle becomes a cone. A rectangle becomes a cylinder.

Look at the picture. Each flat shape on the left has a solid partner on the right. When you look at the flat side of a box, you see a square. When you look at the end of a soup can, you see a circle. The 2D shapes are hiding on the 3D shapes!
