People have been counting for a very, very long time! Long ago, people needed to count their animals, food, and tools. They wanted to know how many things they had. Counting helped people keep track of what was important to them.

At first, people always started counting from 1. But what if you already counted 5 apples and then found more? You don't need to go back to 1! You can just keep going: 6, 7, 8. This is called counting forward from any number. It saves time and makes counting easier!

Let's try it! If you start at 3, what comes next? 3 + 1 = 4. Then 4 + 1 = 5. Then 5 + 1 = 6. You just counted forward from 3: 3, 4, 5, 6!

What About Bigger Numbers?

The rule is the same! After 12 comes 13, after 13 comes 14. Each number is still one more than the one before.
