People have been putting shapes together for a very long time! Long ago, builders used small shapes to make big, beautiful buildings. Artists used shapes to make pictures. Even today, you put shapes together when you play with blocks or puzzles!

What Does It Mean to Compose Shapes?

When we compose shapes, we take two or more small shapes and put them together to make one bigger shape. The sides of the small shapes need to touch each other. Think of it like snapping puzzle pieces together!

Let's look at how we can put shapes together! In the picture below, you can see two triangles joining to make a rectangle, and two squares joining to make a bigger rectangle.

The top example shows two right triangles (Triangle A in cyan and Triangle B in violet) joining along their longest sides to form a pink rectangle. The bottom example shows two equal squares (yellow and green) placed side by side to form an orange rectangle.

Look at the top picture. Triangle A and Triangle B have their longest sides touching. Together they make a rectangle! Now look at the bottom picture. Two squares sit side by side. Together they make a rectangle! When the sides touch perfectly, the shapes fit together with no gaps.

Rules for Putting Shapes Together

There are some simple rules to follow when you compose shapes. These rules help you make sure your shapes fit together the right way.

Rule 1: Full Sides Must Touch

When you put two shapes together, a full side of one shape touches a full side of the other shape. The sides should be the same length so they match up perfectly.

Rule 2: No Gaps!

There should be no empty space between the shapes. They fit snugly like puzzle pieces.

Rule 3: No Overlaps!

The shapes should not sit on top of each other. Each shape takes its own space.

Counting Shapes

Let's think about how many small shapes we need. If you use 2 triangles, you can make 1 rectangle. If you use 4 squares, you can make 1 bigger square. The more small shapes you use, the bigger your new shape can be!
