Why Do We Build and Draw Shapes?

People have been making shapes for a very, very long time! Long ago, people used shapes to build homes, make art, and solve problems. Let's look at how shapes have helped people through history.

So how do we learn about shapes? We can build them with sticks and clay, and we can draw them with crayons and pencils. When we build and draw shapes, we learn what makes each shape special!

What Makes a Shape a Shape?

Every shape has special parts. When you know these parts, you can build and draw any shape! Let's learn about the important parts of shapes.

Sides

Sides are the straight lines that make up a shape. A triangle has 3 sides. A square has 4 sides. You can use sticks or straws to make sides!

Corners (Vertices)

Corners are where two sides meet. We also call them vertices. You can use clay balls to make corners where sticks connect!

Curves

Some shapes have curves instead of straight sides. A circle is one big curve with no corners at all! You can draw curves with your pencil or bend a pipe cleaner.

Flat Shapes vs. Solid Shapes

Flat shapes are like drawings on paper. Solid shapes are like blocks you can hold. Today we focus on flat shapes!

How to Build a Shape

Building shapes with your hands is one of the best ways to learn about them! When you build a shape, you get to feel the sides and corners. Here is how you can do it.

What You Need

  • Sticks — craft sticks, toothpicks, or straws for the sides
  • Clay balls — small balls of clay or playdough for the corners
  • Pipe cleaners — great for making curved shapes like circles
  • Paper and crayons — for drawing shapes after you build them

Counting Sides and Corners

SHAPE RULE
Number of sides = Number of corners
For straight-sided shapes, the number of sides always equals the number of corners. A triangle has 3 of each. A square has 4 of each!
TRIANGLE
3 sticks + 3 clay balls = 1 triangle
Use 3 sticks for the sides and 3 clay balls for the corners. Push the ends of the sticks into the clay balls to hold them together.
SQUARE
4 same-size sticks + 4 clay balls = 1 square
All 4 sticks must be the same length to make a square. If two sticks are longer, you get a rectangle instead!
🎨 Fun Tip!
To build a circle, you cannot use straight sticks. Try bending a pipe cleaner into a round curve. Or roll a piece of clay into a long snake and curl it into a circle!

How to Draw Shapes

Drawing shapes is just as fun as building them! When you draw a shape, you practice making straight lines, curves, and corners with your pencil or crayon. Let's look at step-by-step ways to draw each shape.

The most important rule for drawing shapes with straight sides is to close the shape. That means your last line must connect back to where you started. If it doesn't connect, it's not a shape yet — it's just lines!

Circles can be tricky to draw! Try tracing around a round object like a cup or a lid. You can also practice making big round movements with your arm before drawing.

Step 1 — Gather Your MaterialsGet 4 sticks that are all the same length. Also get 4 small clay balls. The sticks will be the sides and the clay balls will be the corners.

Step 2 — Make the First CornerTake one clay ball. Push two sticks into it so the sticks make an "L" shape. The sticks should meet at a square corner. Now you have 1 corner and 2 sides.

Step 3 — Add More CornersPut a clay ball on the free end of each stick. Now push one more stick into each of those clay balls. You should start to see a shape forming with 3 corners and 4 sides.

Step 4 — Close the ShapeTake your last clay ball. Use it to connect the two free ends of your sticks. Now all 4 sticks are connected by 4 clay balls. You made a square!

Step 5 — Check Your WorkCount the sides. Are there 4? Count the corners. Are there 4? Are all the sides the same length? If yes, you built a perfect square! If two sides are longer, you built a rectangle — and that's great too!
