Why Do We Look at Shapes?

People have been looking at shapes for a very, very long time! Long ago, people noticed shapes in nature — round moons, pointy mountains, and flat lakes. They wanted to name and understand these shapes. That is how the study of shapes began!

Shapes are all around us! When you look at a door, you see a rectangle. When you look at a ball, you see a sphere. In this lesson, you will learn how to look at shapes closely and talk about what makes them the same and what makes them different.

The Big Ideas About Shapes

Before we compare shapes, we need to know a few big ideas. Shapes have special parts. When we know the parts, we can talk about what is the same and what is different about them.

Flat vs. Solid

Flat shapes (2D) are like pictures on paper — circles, squares, and triangles. Solid shapes (3D) are like real objects you can hold — balls, boxes, and cans.

Sides and Corners

Flat shapes have sides (the straight lines) and corners (the pointy spots where sides meet). A circle has no sides or corners!

Faces, Edges, and Vertices

Solid shapes have faces (the flat parts), edges (where two faces meet), and vertices (the corners).

Size Doesn't Change the Name

A big triangle and a tiny triangle are both triangles. Size does not change what shape it is!

Turning Doesn't Change the Name

If you turn a square sideways, it still has 4 sides and 4 corners. It is still a square! The way a shape is turned does not change what it is.

Let's look at some flat shapes and solid shapes side by side. The picture below shows you what they look like and their parts.

On the left, you see flat shapes (2D) — circle, square, triangle, and rectangle. On the right, you see solid shapes (3D) — sphere, cube, cylinder, and cone. Flat shapes are like drawings. Solid shapes are like real objects you can hold.

Look at the diagram above. The circle is round with no sides or corners. The square has 4 equal sides and 4 corners. The sphere is like a ball — round all over! The cube is like a box with 6 flat faces.

To compare shapes, we look at their parts. For flat shapes, we count sides and corners. For solid shapes, we count faces, edges, and vertices (that's the fancy word for corners on solid shapes).

How Are Shapes the Same? How Are They Different?

Now comes the fun part — comparing shapes! When we compare, we ask: "How are these shapes alike?" and "How are they different?" We can compare by looking at sides, corners, size, color, and whether they are flat or solid.

This picture shows four comparisons. A big triangle and small triangle are the same shape in different sizes. A square and circle are different because one has corners and the other does not. A turned square is still a square! A cube and sphere are both 3D but have different parts.

When you compare shapes, try using these words: "bigger," "smaller," "same number of sides," "more corners," "flat," "solid," "round," and "pointy." These words help you describe what you see!
