Imagine you are baking cookies and the recipe says you need 2 cups of flour, but your measuring scoop only shows tablespoons. How many tablespoons is that? This is a unit conversion problem — switching from one unit of measurement to another within the same system. People have needed to do this for thousands of years.

On the ISEE, you will see problems that ask you to change feet to inches, pounds to ounces, or minutes to hours. The big question is: should you multiply or divide? This lesson will give you a clear method so you never have to guess.

Core Principles of Unit Conversion

Before we start converting, you need to understand a few important ideas. These principles work the same way whether you are converting length, weight, or time.

Same Quantity, Different Label

When you convert 1 foot to 12 inches, the actual length does not change. You are just describing the same distance with a different unit.

Know Your Conversion Factor

A conversion factor tells you how many small units fit inside one big unit. For example, 1 foot = 12 inches. The number 12 is the conversion factor.

Big to Small → Multiply

Going from a bigger unit to a smaller unit means you need more of them. Multiply by the conversion factor. Example: feet → inches, multiply by 12.

Small to Big → Divide

Going from a smaller unit to a bigger unit means you need fewer of them. Divide by the conversion factor. Example: inches → feet, divide by 12.

Follow the arrows: going in the direction of the arrow means multiply by that number. Going against the arrow means divide by that number.

Notice how the conversion factor always sits on the arrow. If you move from miles to yards, you multiply by 1,760. If you go from yards back to miles, you divide by 1,760. This diagram covers length and weight. We will cover capacity and time next!

The Math Behind Conversions

Every conversion uses one simple formula. Once you know it, you can handle any problem on the ISEE.

BIG UNIT TO SMALL UNIT
Small units = Big units × Conversion factor
Example: 5 feet = 5 × 12 = 60 inches. You multiply because you need more of the smaller unit.
SMALL UNIT TO BIG UNIT
Big units = Small units ÷ Conversion factor
Example: 36 inches = 36 ÷ 12 = 3 feet. You divide because you need fewer of the bigger unit.

Always ask yourself: "Am I going to a smaller unit or a bigger unit?" If your answer has more units, your number should get bigger (multiply). If your answer has fewer units, your number should get smaller (divide). Use this to eliminate wrong answer choices quickly!

Metric Conversions — Powers of 10

The metric system is built on powers of 10. That means every step up or down is just multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000. The staircase diagram below shows how to move between metric prefixes.

Each step down the staircase means you multiply by 10. Going from kilo- all the way to the base unit (3 steps) means ×10 × 10 × 10 = ×1,000.

For the ISEE, the most common metric conversions are kilometers to meters (×1,000), meters to centimeters (×100), and liters to milliliters (×1,000). If you remember the staircase, you will always know which way to go.

Let's walk through a typical ISEE problem together. Follow each step carefully.

Example: A ribbon is 7 feet 4 inches long. How many inches is that in total?
