Why Do We Write Numbers with Digits?

Long ago, people did not have the digits 0–9 that we use today. Some cultures drew tally marks or pictures to count sheep and grain. Writing out numbers in words took up a lot of space!

Over time, people invented shorter ways to write numbers. The system we use today is called standard form. Standard form uses the ten digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 along with place value to show any number.

Core Principles: Place Value and Number Words

Before you can write a number in standard form, you need to know how place value works. Each spot in a number has a different value. The farther left a digit sits, the bigger its value.

Know Your Place Values

From right to left: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions. Each place is 10 times bigger than the one before it.

Listen for Period Words

Words like "thousand" and "million" are called period words. They tell you which group of three digits to fill in.

"Hundred" Means Three Digits

When you hear "hundred" inside a period, it means you need up to three digits in that group. For example, "five hundred" = 500.

If a place is not mentioned, put a zero there. "Two hundred three" is 203, not 23.

The Step-by-Step Method

Here is a simple method you can follow every time. Think of it as a recipe!

STEP 1
Find period words (million, thousand).
These words split the number into groups. Circle them as you read.
STEP 2
Write the digits for each group (up to 3 digits).
"Five hundred twelve" → 512. "Forty" → 040. Remember to use zeros when a place is not mentioned!
STEP 3
Put the groups together with commas.
Line up the groups from left to right. Place a comma between each group of three digits.

Check: count total digits & re-read.
