Why Do We Need to Make Inferences?

People have been reading between the lines for thousands of years. Ancient thinkers realized that words on a page don't always tell you everything. Sometimes, you have to use clues in the text, plus what you already know, to figure out deeper meaning. This skill is called making a logical inference (a conclusion you reach by combining evidence with reasoning).

On the HSPT Reading section, you won't always find the answer spelled out word-for-word. Many questions ask you to figure out what the passage suggests, implies, or most likely means. Let's look at how this skill developed over time.

Core Principles of Logical Inference

Making an inference is like being a detective. You gather text evidence (clues from the passage), add your own background knowledge (things you already know about the world), and arrive at a conclusion. Here are the key ideas you need to know.

Text Evidence First

Every inference must be supported by something in the passage. Look for specific words, phrases, or details that point toward a conclusion.

Use what you already know about the world to make sense of the clues. If a character shivers and puts on a coat, you know it's probably cold outside.

A logical inference follows naturally from the evidence. If the text doesn't support it, it's a guess, not an inference. Avoid answer choices that go too far.

Words like 'suggests,' 'implies,' 'most likely,' and 'can be inferred' in a question tell you the answer won't be stated directly. You need to figure it out.

On the HSPT, wrong answers often twist the text, go too extreme, or bring in ideas that the passage never mentions. Cross them out to find the best choice.

Notice that the passage never says "Maria is angry." But the strong action words ("slammed," "threw") combined with what you know about human behavior lead you straight to that conclusion. That's an inference! On the HSPT, the correct answer is the one that fits the evidence without going too far beyond what the text supports.

How Inference Questions Work on the HSPT

On the HSPT, inference questions use special signal words. When you spot these words, you know the answer won't be copied directly from the passage. Let's look at the most common types.

  • "The passage suggests that…" — You need to figure out what the author hints at.
  • "It can be inferred from the passage that…" — Classic inference wording.
  • "The author most likely believes…" — You must read the author's attitude from clues.
  • "Based on the passage, what would probably happen if…" — You predict using evidence.
  • "Which conclusion is best supported by the passage?" — Find the answer with the strongest proof.

Go back to the passage and locate the key details related to the question. Underline important words, actions, or descriptions.

Ask yourself: "What do these details tell me that isn't said out loud?" Combine the clues with what you know about the world.

Before choosing, ask: "Can I point to evidence in the passage that supports this?" If not, it's probably a guess, not an inference.

Be careful! Wrong answer choices on inference questions often sound reasonable but go beyond what the passage actually says. If the text says a character "frowned," you can infer she's unhappy. But you cannot infer she hates her life. That's too extreme.

Types of Inferences You'll See on the HSPT

Not all inference questions are the same. Some ask about characters' feelings, while others ask about the author's purpose. Knowing the different types will help you spot what the question is really asking. The diagram below shows the four main categories.

Strong Inferences vs. Weak Inferences

Not all inferences are created equal. A strong inference is well-supported by text evidence. A weak inference goes too far or makes assumptions the text doesn't support. The HSPT tests whether you can tell the difference.
