Chemistry: Chemical Reactions

How Substances Change

Chemistry explores how substances interact and change. A chemical reaction happens when substances combine or break apart to form new substances.

Signs of a Chemical Reaction

  • Color change
  • Gas production (bubbles)
  • Temperature change
  • Formation of a solid (precipitate)

Balancing Chemical Equations

In a chemical reaction, atoms are rearranged but not created or destroyed. The number of atoms on each side of the equation must be equal.

Everyday Chemistry

Chemical reactions are everywhere: cooking, cleaning, and even in our bodies!

Formula

"H_2 + O_2 \rightarrow H_2O"

Key Formula

\[H_2 + O_2 \rightarrow H_2O\]

Examples

  • Vinegar and baking soda mix to make bubbles of carbon dioxide gas.

  • Iron rusts when it reacts with oxygen and water.

In a Nutshell

Chemical reactions create new substances by rearranging atoms.

Key Terms

Chemical Reaction
A process where substances change into new substances.
Reactant
A substance that starts a chemical reaction.
Product
