Water Changes Land

When rain falls on a hill, the water runs downhill. It picks up tiny bits of dirt and sand. It carries them to a new place. Rivers and ocean waves do this too. This is called erosion (say: ee-ROH-zhun). Erosion means water or wind moves pieces of land from one spot to another.

Wind Changes Land

Wind can blow sand and dust from one place to another. Think about a windy day at the playground. Sand blows into your eyes! Over a long time, wind can move huge piles of sand. It can even wear away rock, bit by bit.

Fast and Slow Changes

Some changes happen fast. A big flood can change a riverbank in one day! Some changes happen slowly. A river can carve a deep canyon, but it takes thousands of years.

  • A small pile of sand or dirt (outside or in a pan)
  • A cup of water
  • Your eyes to observe!

What to do:

  • Make a small hill out of sand or dirt.
  • Look at your hill carefully. What shape is it?
  • Slowly pour the cup of water over the top of the hill.
  • Watch what happens! Where does the sand or dirt go?

What you might see: The water will make little paths down the hill. It will carry sand and dirt to the bottom. Your hill will get smaller. The sand piles up at the bottom!

What We Found Out

When we poured water on our dirt hill, we saw water carry dirt from the top to the bottom. The hill got smaller! The dirt piled up in a new spot. This is just what happens in nature.
