Materials Have Properties

Every material has its own special properties. Some materials are strong. Some are soft. Some soak up water. Some do not. These properties help us decide what to use.

We Test to Find the Best

When we want to pick the best material, we do a test. We try each material and see what happens. Then we look at our results (that means what we found out) and pick the winner!

You will test three materials: aluminum foil, a cotton cloth, and plastic wrap.

What You Need:

  • 3 ice cubes (the same size)
  • Aluminum foil
  • A cotton cloth (like a washcloth)
  • Plastic wrap
  • 3 plates

Steps:

Step 1Wrap one ice cube in aluminum foil. Put it on a plate.

Step 2Wrap one ice cube in the cotton cloth. Put it on a plate.

Step 3Wrap one ice cube in plastic wrap. Put it on a plate.

Step 4Wait 15 minutes. Unwrap each ice cube. Which one melted the most? Which melted the least?

What We Found Out

When we tested the three materials, we could see which one did the best job. The cotton cloth kept the ice cube from melting the most. The plastic wrap did not work as well — the ice melted a lot!

We know this because we looked at the results. The results are what happened in our test. We compared the ice cubes and saw which one was still the biggest.
