Why Do We Test Communication Devices?

People have always wanted to talk to each other, even when they are far apart. Long ago, people used drums, horns, and even smoke signals to send messages! Over time, people built new communication devices โ€” tools that help us send and receive messages. But how do we know if a device really works? We have to test it!

How Sound Travels in a Device

When you talk, your voice makes the air vibrate. That means the air shakes back and forth really fast. These shakes are called sound waves. A communication device uses sound waves to carry your message from one place to another.

Think about a string telephone. When you talk into the cup, your voice makes the bottom of the cup vibrate. The cup shakes the string. The string carries the vibrations to the other cup. The other cup vibrates and your friend hears the sound! This is how sound waves travel through a device.
