Let's look at a toy car as an example. When we take a toy car apart, we can see all the pieces inside. The picture below shows the toy car and its pieces.

How to Describe What You See

When you take apart an object, you need to use special words to describe each piece. Scientists call these words properties. A property tells something about what a piece looks like or feels like.

Words to Describe Pieces

  • Color — What color is the piece? Red, blue, yellow, clear?
  • Shape — Is it round, square, long, flat?
  • Size — Is it big, small, tall, short?
  • Material — Is it made of plastic, wood, metal, or paper?
  • Texture — Is it smooth, bumpy, rough, or soft?

Use your eyes to see color and shape. Use your hands to feel texture and size. Use your words to tell a friend what you found!

When you describe each piece, you are thinking like a scientist! You are observing. That means you are looking carefully and telling what you see.

Sorting and Comparing Pieces

When pieces are snapped, stacked, or loosely connected, they are easy to take apart. When pieces are glued or nailed together, they are much harder. Always ask a grown-up before you take something apart!
