Erosion is when wind or water wears away rock and soil. A river can slowly carve a canyon over millions of years!

How Do Slow Earth Events Work?

Slow Earth events work because tiny, small changes add up over a long time. Think about it this way: if you put one grain of sand in a bucket every day, after a whole year you would have 365 grains of sand! After many, many years, you would have a LOT of sand.

What Makes These Changes Happen?

Water is one of the biggest helpers in slow Earth events. Rain falls on rocks and slowly breaks them apart. Rivers carry tiny pieces of rock to new places. Ocean waves crash on the shore and slowly change the shape of the coast.

Wind also helps shape the Earth. Wind blows sand against rocks, and this slowly wears the rocks down. Have you ever seen a rock with smooth, round shapes? Wind may have helped make it that way!

Ice is very powerful too. When water gets into a crack in a rock and freezes, the ice pushes the crack open. Over many freezes, the rock breaks apart. Big sheets of ice called glaciers slowly move across the land and carve out huge valleys.

Plants can also change rocks! Tree roots grow into cracks in rocks and slowly push them apart. This is another kind of weathering.
