Everything around you is made of matter (that means "stuff"). A block is matter. A LEGO brick is matter. A stick is matter. When you put pieces of matter together, you make an object โ€” like a tower, a house, or a necklace.

After you finish, ask yourself: Did the pieces change? Or did the way I put them together change?

What We Found Out

When you did the investigation, you probably noticed something important. The pieces stayed exactly the same. You had the same number of blocks. They were the same colors and shapes.

But the object you made was totally different! A wall looks nothing like a house. That is because you changed the arrangement โ€” the way the pieces were put together.
