Why Do We Take Things Apart and Rebuild?

People have been taking things apart and putting them back together for a very long time! Long ago, children played with blocks made of wood. They could build a tower, knock it down, and then use the same blocks to build a house. The blocks did not change. Only the shape they made changed.

Look at the picture below. On the left side, you see a house made of colorful shapes. On the right side, the same shapes are put together to make a boat. Count the shapes — they are the same on both sides!

The house on the left uses a yellow triangle, a red rectangle, a blue rectangle, a green square, and a purple bar. The boat on the right uses the exact same five pieces!

Did you notice? The triangle is the roof of the house but the front of the boat. The rectangles moved to new places. No pieces were added or taken away. This shows that rearranging the same pieces can make a brand-new object!

How Reassembling Works

When you reassemble pieces, you follow a few simple steps. First, you take apart an object into its pieces. Next, you look at each piece. What shape is it? What color is it? How big is it? Then, you plan what new thing you want to make. Finally, you build your new object!

Important Rules for Reassembling

  • Rule 1: You must use the same pieces. Do not add new ones or throw any away.
  • Rule 2: Each piece keeps its own shape, color, and size. A red triangle stays a red triangle.
  • Rule 3: You can move pieces to new spots. You can turn them. You can flip them.
  • Rule 4: The new object can look very different from the old one, even though the pieces are the same!
