What Are Vibrations and Sound?

Before we can ask good questions, we need to know some important words. A vibration is when something moves back and forth very fast. Think about a guitar string after you pluck it. It wiggles back and forth really quickly! That wiggling is a vibration. When something vibrates, it pushes the air around it. That push travels through the air to your ears. When it reaches your ears, you hear a sound!

Here is the trick: First, you observe something (watch or listen). Then, you wonder about it. Then, you turn your wonder into a question! For example, you notice a ruler makes a funny sound when you flick it on a table. You wonder why. So you ask: "Why does the ruler make a buzzing sound when I flick it?" That is a great science question!

Different Vibrations, Different Sounds

Not all sounds are the same! Some sounds are high, like a whistle. Some sounds are low, like a big drum. Some sounds are loud, and some sounds are soft. The vibrations are what make them different. When something vibrates fast, the sound is high. When something vibrates slow, the sound is low. When something vibrates a lot (big wiggles), the sound is loud. When something vibrates a little (tiny wiggles), the sound is soft.
