Why Do Scientists Study Habitats?

People have always been curious about nature. Long ago, explorers traveled to far-away places. They saw new plants and animals they had never seen before! They wrote about what they found. They drew pictures. This is how people first started to learn about habitats (the places where plants and animals live).

Scientists learned something very important. Not all places have the same living things. A pond has frogs and fish. A forest has squirrels and owls. This big question drives our lesson: Why are different habitats home to different plants and animals?

Big Ideas About Habitats and Diversity

Before we compare habitats, let's learn some important words and ideas. A habitat is a place where living things make their home. Diversity means having many different kinds of living things in one place. When a habitat has lots of different plants and animals, we say it has high diversity.

A habitat is the place where a plant or animal lives. It gives them food, water, and shelter.

Diversity means variety. It is how many different kinds of living things are in one place.

To observe means to look carefully. Scientists observe with their eyes, ears, and other senses.

To compare means to see how two things are alike and different. We can compare two habitats!

The forest has oak trees, pine trees, maple trees, a squirrel, an owl, a deer, a fox, a fern, and a bird. That is 9 different living things. The forest has higher diversity because it has more different kinds of living things.

How Do We Count and Compare?

Scientists don't just guess which habitat has more diversity. They use a simple plan! First, they observe each habitat carefully. Then they make a list of every different kind of plant and animal they see. Finally, they compare the two lists.

Steps to Compare Habitat Diversity

  1. Step 1: Pick two habitats to visit (like a pond and a forest).
  2. Step 2: Look carefully at each habitat. Use your eyes and ears!
  3. Step 3: Write down or draw every different kind of plant and animal you see.
  4. Step 4: Count how many different kinds are in each habitat.
  5. Step 5: Compare the numbers! The habitat with more kinds has more diversity.

We count different kinds of living things, not the total number. If you see 10 ants, that still counts as just 1 kind of animal.

Different Habitats Around Us

There are many kinds of habitats on Earth. Each one looks different and has different living things. Let's look at a chart that shows some habitats and what lives in them.

The chart shows us that the desert has the fewest kinds of living things. That's because deserts are very hot and dry. The forest has the most kinds. Forests have lots of water, shade, and food for many animals and plants.
