A long, long time ago, people looked up at the sky every day. They noticed that the Sun did not always act the same way. In summer, the Sun stayed up for a long time. In winter, it got dark early! People wanted to know why.

Farmers needed to know how much daylight they would get. Daylight is the time when the Sun is up and it is light outside. More daylight meant more time to grow food!

The amount of daylight is not the same every day. Some days have more sunlight. Some days have less. This change follows a pattern.

How Daylight Changes — Counting Hours

We can count how many hours of daylight we get each day. We look at when the Sun comes up — that is called sunrise. Then we look at when the Sun goes down — that is called sunset. The time between sunrise and sunset is our daylight!

If the Sun comes up at 7 in the morning and goes down at 5 in the evening, we count the hours in between. That is 10 hours of daylight! In summer, the Sun might be up from 6 in the morning until 9 at night — that is about 15 hours!

Look at the table above! Summer has the most daylight hours — about 15 hours. Winter has the fewest — only about 9 hours. Spring and fall are in the middle with about 12 hours each.
