A long, long time ago, people looked up at the sky every day. They noticed that the Sun did not always act the same way. In summer, the Sun stayed up for a long time. In winter, it got dark early! People wanted to know why.
Farmers needed to know how much daylight they would get. Daylight is the time when the Sun is up and it is light outside. More daylight meant more time to grow food!
Today we are going to be daylight detectives! We will look at patterns in how much sunlight we get in different seasons. A pattern is something that happens the same way again and again.

Do you see the pattern? Winter has the smallest yellow area. Then spring gets bigger. Summer has the biggest yellow area of all! Then fall gets smaller again. This happens every single year.
How Daylight Changes — Counting Hours
We can count how many hours of daylight we get each day. We look at when the Sun comes up — that is called sunrise. Then we look at when the Sun goes down — that is called sunset. The time between sunrise and sunset is our daylight!
