What's Happening?
You know your toys are still there. Your shoes are still on the floor. But you cannot see them! Then someone turns on a light — and suddenly you can see everything again!
Big Ideas About Light and Seeing
We need light to see things. That means light is not just nice to have — it is needed. Without light, our eyes cannot see anything at all!
Objects Need Light to Be Seen
Light Goes Into Your Eyes
Let's Try It!
Scientists learn by trying things and watching what happens. Let's do a simple test!
What you need: a small toy, a box with a lid (like a shoe box), and a flashlight.
What you should notice: When the box is dark, you cannot see the toy. When light goes in, you CAN see it!
What We Found Out
When the box was dark, we could not see the toy. The toy was still inside! It did not go away. But our eyes had no light to use.
When we let light in, we could see the toy right away. The light shines on the toy and then bounces into our eyes. That is how seeing works!
So there are two steps to seeing:
Step 1: Light shines on an object.
Step 2: That light bounces off and goes into your eyes.
If Step 1 does not happen, Step 2 cannot happen. That is why you cannot see in the dark!
Do You See the Pattern?
Scientists look for patterns. A pattern is when things happen the same way again and again. Let's look for a pattern about cause and effect.
Cause and effect means: when you do one thing, something else happens because of it.
| What Happens (Cause) | What You See (Effect) |
|---|---|
| 🔦 You turn ON a flashlight | 👀 You CAN see things |
| 🌑 You turn OFF the flashlight | 🙈 You CANNOT see things |
| ☀️ The Sun comes up | 👀 You CAN see outside |
| 🌙 The Sun goes down (nighttime) | 🙈 It is hard to see outside |
| 💡 You turn on a lamp | 👀 You CAN see your book |
See the pattern? Every time there is light, you can see. Every time there is no light, you cannot see. Light is the cause. Seeing is the effect.
Light in the Real World
People use what they know about light to solve problems every day!
Flashlights: When the power goes out, your house gets dark. A flashlight gives you light so you can see and move around safely.
Nightlights: Some kids have a small light in their bedroom at night. It gives a little light so they can see if they need to get up.
Can you think of a problem that happens because it is dark? How would you solve it using light? You're thinking like an engineer! That means someone who solves problems.
Words to Know
- Light — A kind of energy that lets us see things. It comes from the Sun, light bulbs, flashlights, and other sources.
- Object — A thing you can see or touch, like a toy, a book, or a cup.
- Evidence — Proof! It is what you observe that helps you explain something.
- Source — Where something comes from. A light source is where light comes from, like the Sun or a lamp.
- Cause and Effect — When one thing makes another thing happen. Light (cause) lets you see (effect).
