Why Do People Sort Materials?

People have been sorting things for a very long time! Long ago, people needed to pick the right materials to build homes, make tools, and stay warm. They looked at things carefully and put them into groups. This helped them choose the best material for the job.

Observe with Your Senses

You can look at a material to see its color and shape. You can touch it to feel if it is smooth or rough.

Properties are like clues. Color, texture, hardness, and flexibility are all properties that help us sort.

Same Property = Same Group

If two materials share the same property, they can go in the same group. A red block and a red ball are both red!

How Do We Observe Properties?

To sort materials, we first need to observe them carefully. Observing means using your senses to find out about something. Here are ways to observe materials.

Use Your Eyes 👀

Look at the material. What color is it? Is it shiny or dull? Is it see-through or not? Your eyes tell you a lot!

Use Your Hands 🤲

Touch the material. Is it smooth or rough? Is it hard or soft? Can you bend it? Your hands help you feel the texture and hardness.

Try a Simple Test 🧪

You can also test a material. Does it float in water or sink? Does it stretch? Does it break easily? These are all observations that help you describe what a material is like.

Common Properties We Use to Sort

There are many properties we can use to sort materials. Let us look at some of the most common ones. The picture below shows a chart of properties you might observe.

Let us practice sorting two materials and explaining why they belong in the same group. Imagine you have a wooden pencil and a wooden ruler. Do they belong in the same group?
