Where Did This Big Idea Come From?

For a very long time, people have looked at animals and plants to get ideas. They watch how birds fly. They see how fish swim. They notice how sticky burrs stick to a dog's fur. Then they think, "Can I make something that works like that?" This idea of copying nature is called biomimicry. "Bio" means life. "Mimicry" means to copy. So biomimicry means copying life!

Big Ideas About Biomimicry

Before you design something, you need to know a few big ideas. Plants and animals have special parts that help them live. We call these parts structures. Each structure has a job. We call that job a function. When we copy a structure and its function, we are doing biomimicry!

Find a plant or animal part that does something cool. What is its shape? How does it work?

See how each nature part has a special shape? People looked at that shape and copied it using different materials. The burr has tiny hooks, so Velcro has tiny hooks too — but made from fabric! The bird wing is curved, so the airplane wing is curved too — but made from metal!

How Does Biomimicry Design Work?

When you design a biomimicry solution, you follow steps — like a recipe! First, you observe (look carefully at) a plant or animal part. Then you figure out what that part does. Next, you think about what materials you can use. Finally, you build and test your design.

Follow these six steps to design a biomimicry solution: Observe, Find the Job, Pick Materials, Build, Test, and Make It Better!

Notice that after you test, you can go back and make it better. This is just like what real scientists and engineers do. They try something, see if it works, and then change it. That is called the design process!

Step 1 — Observe NatureA porcupine has quills that stick straight up from its body. The quills stay in place and don't fall out. Each quill fits snugly in the porcupine's skin.
Nature idea: Quills stick up from a round body.

Step 2 — Find the FunctionThe quills are held in holes in the porcupine's skin. The holes keep each quill standing up straight. This is just like how we want pencils to stand up straight!
Function: Holes hold stick-shaped things upright.

Step 3 — Pick MaterialsWe need something round for the body and something to make holes in. We can use clay! Clay is soft enough to poke holes in, and it gets hard when it dries.
Materials: Clay (round ball) and a pencil to poke holes.

Step 4 — Build the DesignRoll the clay into a round ball. Use a pencil to poke holes in the top. Make the holes deep enough so pencils stand up without falling. Let the clay dry.
