Why Do We Describe Materials?

People have always needed to pick the right materials to build things. A long, long time ago, people looked at rocks, wood, and animal skins. They asked, "Which one is hard? Which one bends?" By paying attention to properties (the words we use to tell what something is like), people could choose the best material for each job.

So how do we describe materials? What words do we use? Let's find out!

The Four Big Properties

When we look at a material, we can describe it using special words called properties. A property tells us what something is like. There are four big properties we will learn about today.

Color

What color is the material? You use your eyes to see color. A fire truck is red. A banana is yellow.

Texture

How does it feel when you touch it? Texture tells us if something is smooth, rough, bumpy, or soft. A kitten is soft. Sandpaper is rough.

Hardness

Is it easy or hard to scratch? Hardness tells us how strong the surface is. A diamond is very hard. Chalk is soft and easy to break.

Flexibility

Can you bend it without breaking it? Flexibility tells us if something bends. A rubber band is flexible. A stick of chalk is not flexible.

Looking at Properties Up Close

Look at the diagram above. The brick is red, rough, hard, and stiff. The sponge is yellow, bumpy, soft, and flexible. Each object is different. That is why we use property words to describe them clearly!

How Do We Test Properties?

Scientists do not just guess what a material is like. They use their senses and simple tests. Here is how you can test each property.

Testing Color

Use your eyes! Look at the material in good light. Say its color out loud. Some materials have more than one color, like a rainbow eraser.

Testing Texture

Gently touch the material with your fingers. Ask yourself: Is it smooth like glass? Rough like sandpaper? Bumpy like a waffle? Soft like cotton? The word you pick is the texture.

Testing Hardness

Try to scratch the material gently with your fingernail. If your nail makes a mark, the material is soft. If it does not scratch, the material is hard. Always be safe and ask a grown-up before testing!

Testing Flexibility

Try to bend the material carefully. If it bends easily and does not break, it is flexible. If it does not bend at all, it is stiff (not flexible).

Never taste or smell a material to test it unless a teacher says it is okay. Use your eyes and hands to stay safe.

Sorting Materials by Properties

Once we know the properties of materials, we can sort them into groups. Sorting helps us compare things and pick the right material for a job.

Look at where each material sits on the chart! The sponge is in the top left because it is soft and flexible. The rock is in the bottom right because it is hard and stiff. Paper sits in the middle because it is medium hard and pretty flexible.

Let's Describe a Pencil!

Let's practice describing a material together. Imagine you are holding a yellow pencil. Follow these steps!

Step 1 — Look at ItUse your eyes. What color is the pencil? It is yellow with a pink eraser on top and a gray tip.

Step 2 — Touch ItRun your fingers along the pencil. How does it feel? The wood part is smooth. The metal part near the eraser feels smooth and cold.
Texture: Smooth

Step 3 — Try to Scratch ItGently try to scratch the pencil with your fingernail. Your nail might leave a tiny mark in the soft wood. That means the wood part is not very hard.
Hardness: Medium (wood is softer than metal)

Step 4 — Try to Bend ItHold each end and try to gently bend the pencil. Does it bend? No! It stays straight. If you push too hard it would snap, not bend.
Flexibility: Stiff (not flexible)

Great job! Now you can describe a pencil: It is yellow, smooth, medium hard, and stiff. Try this with other objects around you!
