Why Do We Test Materials?

People have always needed to pick the right stuff to build things. Long ago, people tried out different rocks, sticks, and clay to see what worked best. They tested materials by touching, bending, and breaking them. This is how they learned what to use!

What Are Material Properties?

Every material has special things about it called properties. Properties tell us what a material is like. Is it hard or soft? Is it bendy or stiff? Does water go through it? These clues help us pick the best material for a job.

Strength

How hard is it to break? Strong materials do not break easily. A rock is stronger than a cracker!

Flexibility

Can it bend without breaking? Rubber bands are very flexible. A stick is not!

Absorbency

Does it soak up water? A sponge absorbs water. A plastic plate does not!

Hardness

Is it easy to scratch? A diamond is very hard. Chalk is soft and scratches easily.

Seeing Test Results

Look at the chart above. The rock is the strongest. The sponge is the most flexible and soaks up water. The paper is a little bendy and also soaks up water. Each one is best for a different job!

How Do We Decide? The Steps!

Deciding which material is best is like being a detective. You follow steps! First, you think about what the job is. Then, you look at your test results. Finally, you match the best material to the job. Let us see these steps as a picture!

Follow three steps: first, think about what the job needs. Second, look at the test results. Third, pick the material that matches the job best!

In the example above, we needed a toy boat. A boat needs to float on water and be strong enough not to fall apart. We looked at three materials. Wood was the winner because it is strong AND it floats!

Comparing Materials Side by Side

A great way to analyze test results is to put them in a table. A table makes it easy to see all the results at the same time. Let us look at a table that compares four materials for making an umbrella!

Look at the table. An umbrella needs to keep water out, be light enough to carry, and be strong in wind. Plastic got a YES for all three tests! Paper lets water through. Cloth gets wet too. Metal keeps water out and is strong, but it is too heavy. So plastic is the best choice for an umbrella!
