Why Does Explaining What You Read Matter?

Every day, people read all kinds of nonfiction writing. A doctor reads about how a new medicine works. A builder reads the steps for putting up a roof. A student reads about why volcanoes erupt. In every case, the reader needs to explain what the text is telling them β€” not just repeat it word-for-word, but really understand it and put it in their own words.

People have been writing informational texts for thousands of years! Here is a short timeline showing how nonfiction writing has changed over time.

Ancient Egyptians wrote instructions on papyrus scrolls. They explained steps for building pyramids and preparing food.

The Greek thinker Aristotle wrote books about animals and nature. He explained why things happen, not just what happens.
1440s
The printing press was invented. Now nonfiction books could be shared with lots of people, and students needed to learn how to understand them.
1900s
Schools started teaching reading comprehension as a skill. Students practiced explaining what they read in science, history, and more.
Today
You read informational text on websites, in textbooks, and in articles. Being able to explain events, steps, ideas, and concepts is one of the most important skills you can learn!

So here's the big question this lesson helps you answer: When you read a passage about history, science, or how something works, how do you figure out what it means and explain it clearly?

Four Things You Can Be Asked to Explain

When your teacher asks you to "explain" what you read in an informational text, they usually want you to talk about one of four things. Let's learn about each one.

Events

Events are things that happened. In a history book, an event might be a battle, a discovery, or a law being passed. You explain an event by saying what happened, when it happened, and why it was important.

Procedures

A procedure is a set of steps that tells you how to do something. A recipe is a procedure. So are the directions for a science experiment. You explain a procedure by describing the steps in order.

Ideas

An idea is a thought or opinion the author shares. For example, an author might have the idea that recycling helps the Earth. You explain an idea by saying what the author thinks and what reasons they give.

Concepts

A concept is a big topic or principle. "Gravity" is a concept. So is "democracy." You explain a concept by describing what it means and giving examples that help someone else understand it.

Notice in the diagram that events and procedures are at the top and use time order β€” they are about things happening in a sequence. Meanwhile, ideas and concepts are at the bottom and are about understanding β€” they ask you to think deeply about meaning. All four connect back to the informational text in the center.

How to Explain What You Read: A Step-by-Step Method

Good readers don't just read once and say "I'm done." They use a method β€” a set of steps β€” to make sure they really understand. Here is a method you can use every time you read an informational text.

Let's look at each step a little more closely. In Step 1, you read the whole passage carefully. Don't rush! In Step 2, ask yourself: "Is this about something that happened, steps to follow, what the author thinks, or a big topic I need to understand?" This tells you what kind of explanation you need to write. In Step 3, you hunt for key details β€” signal words like "because," "first," "as a result," or "for example" will point you to important information. In Step 4, you take all those details and write your explanation in your own words. Finally, in Step 5, you go back and check. Did you miss anything important? Does your explanation make sense?

Three Types of Informational Text

When you know which type of text you are reading, it's easier to figure out what to explain. If you see dates and words like "because" and "as a result," you're probably reading a historical text and need to explain events. If you see words like "first," "next," and "then," you're probably reading a technical text and need to explain a procedure.
