Approach 1 — Starting from Net Income

Approach 2 — Starting from EBIT

FCF = EBIT × (1 − T) + D&A − ΔWC − CapEx
Here, EBIT × (1 − T) is called NOPAT (Net Operating Profit After Taxes). Because EBIT is calculated before interest expense, no interest add-back is needed, which is why many analysts prefer this cleaner formulation.

Shortcut — Starting from Cash Flow from Operations

If the firm's cash flow from operations (CFO) on the statement of cash flows already incorporates depreciation add-backs and working capital adjustments, the shortcut formula is simply CFO minus CapEx. Note that this version yields levered FCF (FCFE) when CFO is reported after interest payments—so use it carefully depending on the context of the analysis.
