Advanced Placement Psychology studying behavior and mental processes.

Basic Concepts

Biological Bases of Behavior

The Brain: Your Command Center

Our thoughts, feelings, and actions all have roots in our biology. The brain and nervous system are like a supercomputer running our bodies.

Brain Structures

  • Cerebral Cortex: Controls thinking, planning, and decision-making.
  • Limbic System: Handles emotions and memories.
  • Brainstem: Keeps us alive by controlling breathing and heart rate.

How Neurons Work

Neurons send messages using electrical impulses and chemicals called neurotransmitters. Imagine a chain of people passing notes—each neuron passes the message along.

Genes and Behavior

Genetics also play a role. Some traits, like eye color, are inherited, while others, like shyness, may be influenced by both genes and environment.

Everyday Impact

Knowing about the brain helps us understand things like why we get nervous before speaking in public or how medications can affect our mood.

Examples

  • Someone with a concussion might have trouble remembering things because their brain is injured.

  • A person feels happier after exercise because their brain releases endorphins.

In a Nutshell

Our behavior and mental processes are influenced by the brain, nervous system, and genetics.
