The most important step in research is crafting a strong question. A question that is too broad will overwhelm you with information. A question that is too narrow might not have enough sources. The sweet spot is a focused question (a question that is specific enough to research in a short project but open enough to explore from different angles).

Generating Follow-Up Questions

Once you begin reading sources, your brain will naturally wonder about new things. Write those wonders down! These become your follow-up questions. Good follow-up questions often start with words like why, how, what if, and what else.

Finding and Evaluating Sources

A research project is only as strong as its sources. But not every website, book, or video is trustworthy. In this section, you will learn how to identify different types of sources and evaluate whether they are reliable.

The Source Reliability Pyramid shows how different types of sources rank in general trustworthiness. Scholarly journals sit at the top because they are reviewed by experts. Social media posts sit at the bottom because anyone can post without fact-checking.

The CRAAP Test for Evaluating Sources

One popular way to evaluate a source is the CRAAP Test (a checklist that stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose). Ask these five questions about every source you use.

  • Currency: When was this published or updated? Is it recent enough for my topic?
  • Relevance: Does this source actually answer my research question?
  • Authority: Who is the author? Are they an expert in this field?
  • Accuracy: Is the information backed by evidence? Can I verify it in another source?
  • Purpose: Why was this written? Is it meant to inform, sell something, or persuade?
