Why Do People Make Maps?

Imagine you want to find a river near your town. You cannot see it from your backyard. A map is a flat drawing that shows what an area looks like from above. People have been making maps for thousands of years to explore the world around them.

Long ago, travelers needed to know where mountains and rivers were. They drew simple pictures on clay, paper, and animal skins. Over time, maps got better and more accurate.

Before you read a map, you need to know some important ideas. Earth has many different landforms (natural shapes on land) and water features (bodies of water). Maps use special tools to show these features clearly.

Map Key (Legend)

A map key is a box that explains what the symbols and colors on a map mean. It is like a decoder for the map.

Compass Rose

A compass rose shows the four directions: North, South, East, and West. It helps you figure out which way things are on the map.

A map scale tells you how distances on the map compare to real distances. One inch on a map might equal ten miles in real life.

Reading a Physical Map

A physical map shows the natural features of an area. It uses colors and shapes to help you see where mountains, rivers, and plains are located. The diagram below shows an example of a physical map with a map key.

This physical map shows the Maplewood Region. Notice the map key on the right side. It tells you that triangles are mountains, blue lines are rivers, and the colors show different types of land.

Look at the map above. You can see two mountains in the north part of the map. The Blue River flows between them. A lake sits in the southeast, and flat plains stretch across the southwest. The compass rose helps you know which direction is north.

How Maps Show Earth's Surface

Earth's surface is not flat. It has high places and low places. Maps need a way to show these differences even though the map itself is flat. One way maps do this is by using different colors for different heights. This is called elevation (how high land is above the ocean).

How Colors Show Elevation

Many physical maps use a color pattern to show height. Green usually means low, flat land near sea level. Yellow and brown mean higher land. White or dark brown often means the highest mountains. Blue always means water.

Patterns: Cause and Effect on Maps

When you look at a map, you can notice patterns. Rivers usually flow from high places to low places. Lakes often form in low areas. Mountains are usually grouped together in long lines called mountain ranges. These patterns help scientists understand how water and land interact.

Types of Earth's Features on Maps

Earth has many different features. Some are made of land, and some are made of water. Let's look at the most common features you will see on a physical map.

The top section shows a cross-section — a view from the side. You can see how elevation goes from high mountains down to the low ocean. The bottom section lists common landforms and water features you will find on maps.

Notice the pattern in the diagram. Land gets lower as you move from the mountains toward the ocean. Rivers carry water from high places to low places. This is a great example of cause and effect. Gravity causes water to flow downhill, so rivers always move toward lower ground.

Worked Example: Reading a Map Step by Step

Let's practice reading a map together. Imagine you have a physical map of a state park. The map shows Eagle Mountain in the north, Deer Creek running east to west, and Sunset Lake in the south. The map key shows brown triangles for mountains, blue lines for creeks, and blue shapes for lakes.

Step 1 — Look at the Map KeyFirst, find the map key (legend). Read each symbol and color. The key tells you that a brown triangle means a mountain, a blue line means a creek, and a blue oval means a lake.

Step 4 — Describe Patterns and RelationshipsNow ask: How are the features connected? Deer Creek flows from near the mountain down to the lake. This makes sense because water flows from high places to low places. The mountain is the highest feature, and the lake is in a low area.
The creek connects the mountain area to the lake. Water flows downhill from the mountain to the lake.

Step 5 — Use the Scale to Estimate DistanceCheck the map scale. It says 1 inch = 2 miles. The distance from Eagle Mountain to Sunset Lake on the map is about 3 inches. So the real distance is about 3 × 2 = 6 miles.
Eagle Mountain is about 6 miles from Sunset Lake.

Comparing Different Types of Maps

Not all maps are the same! Different types of maps are useful for different purposes. Let's compare three kinds of maps you might use to study Earth's features.
