Reading a Bar Graph Step by Step

Now let's practice with a real example. Imagine you are reading a science article about recycling at Oak Street Elementary School. The article says: "Our school recycled more paper than any other material last month." Then you see the bar graph below.

This bar graph shows how many pounds of each material the school recycled. The tallest bar is Paper at 90 pounds. The graph supports the text by proving that paper was recycled the most.

Let's use the T-I-E strategy on this graph. First, the Title tells us it shows pounds of materials recycled. The labels along the bottom tell us the four materials: Paper, Plastic, Glass, and Cans.

Next, we Identify the Information. Paper has the tallest bar at 90 pounds. Plastic is next at 50 pounds. Cans are 40 pounds, and Glass is the smallest at 20 pounds.

Finally, we Explain the Connection. The text said the school recycled more paper than anything else. The graph proves this is true because the paper bar is the tallest. The graph also gives us exact numbers that the text did not include!

Let's walk through another example, step by step. Imagine you are reading a social studies article about the history of space exploration.
