Scientists have studied plants and animals for hundreds of years. One big discovery they made is that individuals of the same species can look different from each other. A species is a group of living things that are the same kind — like all golden retrievers, all sunflowers, or all humans.
Even though members of the same species share many features, they also have variations. A variation is a difference in a trait between individuals. A trait is a feature or characteristic of a living thing, like fur color, height, leaf shape, or the pattern on a butterfly's wings.

Your investigation: Imagine your class collected 15 leaves from the same oak tree in the schoolyard. Even though the leaves all came from the same kind of tree, you would notice that they are not all exactly the same.
Materials you would need:
- 15 leaves from the same species of tree
- A ruler (to measure length in centimeters)
- A data table to record your measurements
- Colored pencils to record color differences
What you would do: Measure the length of each leaf. Record the color shade (light green, medium green, dark green). Count the number of points or lobes on each leaf. Then organize your data in a table and look for patterns in the variation.
Looking at the data table, you can spot both similarities and differences. All the leaves have 7 lobes — that is a trait they share because they are the same species. But their length and color vary. The shortest leaf is only 5.4 cm, and the longest is 9.8 cm. That is almost twice as long! The colors range from light green to dark green to yellow-green.
