Life Cycle of a Butterfly vs. a Frog

The butterfly has four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult butterfly. The frog also has stages: egg, tadpole, tadpole with legs, and adult frog. Both go through metamorphosis!

Look at the diagram above. Both the butterfly and the frog start as eggs. Then they go through young stages that look nothing like the adult. The caterpillar does not look like a butterfly, and the tadpole does not look like a frog! Both animals change shape completely before they become adults. This big change is called metamorphosis.

How Different Life Cycles Work

Three Main Types of Animal Life Cycles

Not all animals change shape like butterflies and frogs. Scientists group animal life cycles into three main types based on how much the young animal changes as it grows up.

Complete Metamorphosis

The animal goes through four very different stages. The young looks nothing like the adult. Examples: butterflies, beetles, flies, and ants.

Incomplete Metamorphosis

The young animal (called a nymph) looks like a small version of the adult. It grows bigger and develops wings over time. Examples: grasshoppers, dragonflies, cockroaches.

No Metamorphosis

The young animal looks like a small adult right away. It just gets bigger. Examples: cats, dogs, humans, and most mammals.

Plant Life Cycles Are Different Too!

Plants also have life cycles, but they work differently from animals. A flowering plant starts as a seed. The seed germinates and grows into a seedling. The seedling grows into an adult plant with flowers. The flowers make new seeds, and the cycle starts again.

Some plants do not have flowers at all. Ferns use tiny things called spores instead of seeds. Pine trees use cones instead of flowers. So even among plants, life cycles can be quite different!
