Where Did Clocks Come From?
People have always wanted to know what time it is! Long, long ago, there were no clocks at all. People looked at the sun to tell if it was morning, noon, or night. Over many years, people invented new and better ways to keep track of time. Let's see how it happened!
Today, we use both analog clocks (the kind with hands that point to numbers) and digital clocks (the kind that just show numbers). In this lesson, you will learn to read both kinds of clocks to the nearest five minutes!

Parts of an Analog Clock
An analog clock is the round clock with hands that spin around. Let's take a close look at its parts. The diagram below shows a clock set to 3:20.
Look at the clock above. The short hand (the hour hand) is between the 3 and the 4. That means the hour is 3. The long hand (the minute hand) is pointing to the 4. Since each number is worth 5 minutes, we count: 5, 10, 15, 20. So the time is 3:20!
Remember: always read the short hand first to find the hour, then read the long hand to find the minutes.
Counting Minutes by 5s
The trick to reading the minute hand is counting by 5s. Each number on the clock stands for 5 more minutes. Here is how it works:
When the long hand points to the 12, the minutes are :00 (zero minutes). We say "o'clock" — like "3 o'clock." When the long hand points to the 6, the minutes are :30 — that's "half past" the hour because 30 is half of 60!
Here's how to practice: look at where the long hand is pointing, start at 12, and count by 5s until you reach that number. If the long hand points to 9, count: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45. The minutes are :45!
A.M. and P.M. — Morning or Night?
A clock goes around twice in one full day. That means the hour hand passes the 12 two times every day! So how do we know if it's morning or nighttime? That's where a.m. and p.m. come in.

Let's read a clock step by step! Imagine you see a clock where the short hand is between the 7 and the 8, and the long hand is pointing to the 9. It is evening and you just finished dinner.

When you read a digital clock like 10:35, the number before the colon (10) is the hour. The number after the colon (35) is the minutes. Easy!
