Why Do We Measure Things?
A long, long time ago, people needed to know how big things were. A farmer wanted to know how wide a field was. A builder needed to know how tall a door should be. But there were no rulers yet! People had to be creative.
They used parts of their own bodies to measure. A "foot" was the length of a person's foot. A "cubit" was the length from your elbow to the tip of your middle finger. The problem? Everyone's arms and feet are different sizes! That made measuring very confusing.
Over time, people got smarter about measuring. They made tools that were always the same size so that everyone could agree. Here is a short story of how measuring tools changed over the years.

See how the ruler is short? It is perfect for small things. The yardstick is three times as long as a ruler. The meter stick is just a little longer than the yardstick. And the measuring tape goes on and on — it can be as long as you need!
How to Measure Step by Step
Measuring is easy when you follow these steps. Let's learn how to measure the right way every time!
This is very important. If you do not start at zero, your measurement will be wrong. Look at the end of your ruler. Do you see the line that says "0"? That is where you put the edge of the thing you are measuring.
Your ruler or stick should be right next to the thing you are measuring. It should not be crooked or floating in the air. Keep it straight like a train track running beside the object.
Where does the other end of the object land on your tool? Look at the closest line. That number tells you how long the object is. If the end of a pencil lands on the line that says "7," then the pencil is 7 inches long!
