Using a Dictionary to Check Your Spelling

Learn how to use a dictionary to find words and make sure you spell them right!

Section 1

Why Do We Check Our Spelling?

Have you ever written a word and thought, "Hmm, does that look right?" That happens to everyone! Even grown-ups are not sure how to spell every word. That is why people made dictionaries. A dictionary is a special book that lists words in order and shows you how to spell them.

People have been writing lists of words for a very, very long time. Let's look at how dictionaries were made over the years!

Long, long ago
People in ancient lands wrote word lists on clay tablets. These helped them learn new words.
The first English dictionaries were made. They were small and only had hard words in them.
A man named Samuel Johnson made a big dictionary with thousands of English words. It took him nine years!
Noah Webster made the first big American dictionary. He wanted to help people spell words the same way.
Today
We have beginning dictionaries made just for kids! They have pictures, easy words, and big letters. We can also look up words on computers.

So, when you are writing and you are not sure about a word, you can do what people have done for hundreds of years — look it up!

Section 2

Key Ideas About Using a Dictionary

Before we open a dictionary, let's learn four big ideas that will help you use one like a pro!

1

ABC Order

Words in a dictionary go in alphabetical order. That means A comes first, then B, then C, all the way to Z!
2

Guide Words

Guide words are at the top of each page. They tell you the first and last word on that page. They help you find words fast!
3

Entry Words

Each word in the dictionary is called an entry word. It is printed in bold so it is easy to see.
4

Definitions

Next to each word, the dictionary tells you what the word means. It may also show a picture!
✦ Key Takeaway
Think of a dictionary like a phone book for words. Just like you look up a name to find a phone number, you look up a word in a dictionary to find the right spelling. The alphabet is your map!
Section 3

The Alphabet Is Your Map

To use a dictionary, you need to know your ABCs really well. Words that start with A come before words that start with B. Words that start with C come before words that start with D. Let's see how that works!

ABCDEFG…Zapplestarts with Abirdstarts with Bcatstarts with Cdogstarts with DWhat if words start with the same letter? Look at the SECOND letter!cab→cat→cupc-A-b (A is 1st)c-A-t (A is 1st)c-U-p (U is 21st)cab comes before cat, and both come before cup!
Words are sorted by their first letter. If two words start with the same letter, look at the second letter!

See how the alphabet helps us put words in order? In a dictionary, apple comes before bird because A comes before B. When two words start with the same letter, like "cab" and "cup", we look at the second letter to decide which comes first.

Section 4

How a Dictionary Works

A dictionary has hundreds or even thousands of words inside it. To find a word quickly, you use two tools: the alphabet and guide words.

Here is how to find a word in a dictionary, step by step:

ℹ Step-by-Step Path
Step 1: Think about the first letter of the word you want to spell. Step 2: Open the dictionary to the part with that letter. Step 3: Look at the guide words at the top of the page. Step 4: Ask yourself: "Does my word come between these two guide words in ABC order?" Step 5: If yes, look down the page. If no, turn the page forward or backward.

Let's say you want to spell the word "friend." You know it starts with the letter F. You open the dictionary to the F section. You look at the guide words at the top of each page until you find the right page. Then you look down the list until you see friend. Now you can check your spelling!

A dictionary page with guide words "free" and "frog" — the word "friend" is found between them.

Look at the picture above. The guide words are "free" and "frog." The word "friend" comes between them in ABC order, so it is on this page. You found it!

Section 5

Inside a Dictionary Entry

When you find a word in the dictionary, you see more than just the spelling. A dictionary entry can tell you many things! Let's look at what you might see:

PartWhat It Tells YouExample
Entry WordThe correct spelling of the word (in bold)happy
DefinitionWhat the word meansFeeling good; full of joy
Example SentenceA sentence using the wordI am happy to see you!
PictureA drawing that helps you understand (in kids' dictionaries)🙂 a smiling face

A beginning dictionary (a dictionary made for kids) is extra helpful. It uses easy words to explain things. It has big print and fun pictures. Some even use colors to help you find letters faster!

📝 Dictionary Entry Example
because (bih-KAWZ) — For the reason that. "I wore my coat because it was cold outside."

See? The dictionary shows you exactly how to spell "because". If you wrote "becuz" in your story, you could look it up and fix it!

Section 6

Let's Try It Together!

Imagine you are writing a story. You write: "The buterfly flew over the garden." You are not sure if "buterfly" is spelled right. Let's use a dictionary to check!

Looking Up "butterfly" in the Dictionary

Step 1 — Think About the First Letter

The word starts with the letter B. So we open the dictionary to the B section.

Step 2 — Look at Guide Words

We turn pages in the B section. We see guide words like "bug" and "bus." Does "buterfly" come between those? Let's think: b-u-g, b-u-s, b-u-t… Yes! The letters u-t come after u-g and u-s. We might be close, but let's keep going.

Step 3 — Find the Right Page

We turn one more page. The guide words are "but" and "buzz." The word "butterfly" starts with "but," so it should be on this page!

Step 4 — Find the Word

We look down the page. We see: but, butter, butterfly, button. There it is!

Step 5 — Check and Fix

The dictionary says the word is butterfly — with two T's! We wrote "buterfly" with only one T. Now we can fix it. The right spelling is butterfly. 🦋
Fixed sentence: "The butterfly flew over the garden." ✅
