Use End Punctuation for Sentences

Every sentence needs a special mark at the end — let's learn which one to use!

SECTION 1

Why Do We Need End Marks?

When you talk, your voice goes up and down. You stop at the end of a thought. But when you write, the reader can't hear your voice! That is why we use little marks at the end of sentences. These marks tell the reader when to stop and how to feel.

People have been using end marks for a very, very long time. Let's look at how they started!

Long, Long Ago
People wrote words with no spaces and no marks. It was really hard to read! Imagine reading "ilikecats" with no break.
About 2,000 Years Ago
A smart man in Greece put dots between groups of words. A dot at the top meant a full stop — just like our period today!
Writers started using the question mark (?) to show when someone is asking something. What a great idea!
Today
Now every sentence in English ends with a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point. You are learning this right now!

So the big question is: Which mark goes at the end of each sentence? Let's find out!

SECTION 2

The Three End Marks

There are three special marks you can put at the end of a sentence. Each one does a different job. Think of them like traffic signs — they tell the reader what to do.

1

Period .

A period is a tiny dot. Use it when you tell something or say something plain. "I like dogs." is a telling sentence.
2

Question Mark ?

A question mark has a curvy line and a dot. Use it when you ask something. "Do you like dogs?" is an asking sentence.
3

Exclamation Point !

An exclamation point is a line with a dot. Use it when you have big feelings — surprise, excitement, or strong commands. "I love dogs!" shows excitement.
4

The Rule

Every sentence must end with one of these three marks. If you forget the mark, the reader doesn't know where to stop!
✦ ✦ KEY TAKEAWAY
Think of end marks like a stop sign for reading. A period is a calm stop. A question mark is a stop where you wait for an answer. An exclamation point is a stop where you shout "Wow!" Just like you need stop signs on a road, you need end marks in writing!
SECTION 3

See the End Marks!

Look at this big picture. It shows the three end marks and what kind of sentence each one goes with.

The Three End Marks.PeriodTELLING SENTENCEI have a cat.(calm voice)?Question MarkASKING SENTENCEDo you like cats?(voice goes up)hmm!Exclamation PointFEELING SENTENCEI love cats!(loud, excited voice)Every sentence ends with ONE of these marks!
The three end marks: period for telling, question mark for asking, exclamation point for feelings.

Look at the faces under each mark. A period goes with a calm face. A question mark goes with a thinking face. An exclamation point goes with a big, happy face. When you write, think about how the sentence sounds. That will help you pick the right mark!

SECTION 4

How to Pick the Right End Mark

Here is a fun way to choose. Ask yourself one question about your sentence. Then follow the path!

Read your sentence!Is it askingsomething?YES?NODoes it haveBIG feelings?YES!NOUse a.

Here is the trick: First, check if the sentence asks something. If yes, use a question mark. If it does not ask, check if the sentence has big feelings like excitement or surprise. If yes, use an exclamation point. If it does not ask and it does not have big feelings, use a period. Easy!

✦ ✦ KEY TAKEAWAY
Imagine you are a mail carrier. You have three mailboxes: one for questions, one for exciting news, and one for regular mail. Every letter (sentence) goes in one mailbox. You just have to read it and decide which box it belongs in!
SECTION 5

Sorting Sentences

Let's look at different sentences and see which end mark each one needs. Pay attention to the feeling words and asking words.

SENTENCETYPEEND MARK
The sun is hotTelling.
Where is my shoeAsking?
Watch outStrong feeling!
I go to schoolTelling.
Can you help meAsking?
That is so coolStrong feeling!

Did you see the pattern? Asking sentences often start with words like who, what, where, when, why, how, can, do, or is. Feeling sentences sound like you would say them in a very loud or surprised voice!

SECTION 6

Let's Try One Together

Here is a sentence with no end mark. Let's figure out which mark it needs.

My dog can run fast ___

Step 1 — Read It Out Loud

Say the sentence: "My dog can run fast." How does your voice sound? Is it calm, or are you shouting?
It sounds calm. You are just telling someone about your dog.

Step 2 — Is It Asking Something?

Does the sentence ask a question? No! It does not start with "who," "what," "can," or another asking word. So we do not use a question mark.

Step 3 — Does It Have Big Feelings?

Are you super excited or surprised? Not really. You are just telling a fact about your dog. So we do not use an exclamation point.

Step 4 — Use a Period!

It is a telling sentence with no big feelings. The answer is a period!
My dog can run fast.
SECTION 7

Comparing the Three Marks

Let's see the same sentence changed three ways. Each time, the end mark changes the meaning!

MARKSENTENCEWHAT IT MEANS
.We are going to the park. You are telling someone calmly.
?Are we going to the park? You want to know — you are asking.
!We are going to the park! You are so happy and excited!

See how the mark changes everything? The same words can feel different just because of the little mark at the end. That is the power of end punctuation!

✦ ✦ KEY TAKEAWAY
Think about singing a song. You can sing the same words softly, with a question in your voice, or loudly with excitement. End marks are like the volume and tone of your writing voice!
SECTION 8

What's Next?

You are learning to use periods, question marks, and exclamation points. That is wonderful! As you grow as a writer, you will also learn about other marks.

WHAT YOU KNOW NOWWHAT YOU WILL LEARN LATER
Period .Comma , to pause inside a sentence
Question mark ?Quotation marks " " to show talking
Exclamation point !Apostrophe ' to show owning

But right now, the most important thing is to put the right mark at the end of every sentence you write. If you can do that, you are on your way to being an amazing writer!

SECTION 9

Practice Time!

Try these five sentences. Pick the right end mark for each one. Then click "Show Answer" to see if you are right!

PROBLEM 1 — WHAT DO YOU KNOW?
What is a period used for?
PROBLEM 2 — PICK THE MARK
What end mark goes at the end of this sentence? I have two sisters ___
PROBLEM 3 — A LITTLE HARDER
What end mark goes at the end of this sentence? Where did you put my book ___
PROBLEM 4 — THINK ABOUT IT
Read this sentence. Then pick the best end mark: Look at that rainbow ___ Hint: Imagine how you would say this if you were outside and saw a big, beautiful rainbow.
PROBLEM 5 — CHALLENGE
Here are three sentences. Write the correct end mark for each one: 1. My name is Sam ___ 2. Do you want to play ___ 3. That was so fun ___
SUMMARY

What We Learned

Every sentence needs an end mark. There are three end marks to know. A period ( . ) goes at the end of a telling sentence — a sentence that says something calmly. A question mark ( ? ) goes at the end of an asking sentence — a sentence that wants an answer. An exclamation point ( ! ) goes at the end of a feeling sentence — a sentence that shows big excitement, surprise, or a strong command.

To choose the right mark, read the sentence out loud. Ask yourself: "Is it asking something?" If yes, use ? Ask: "Does it have big feelings?" If yes, use ! If it is just telling, use . Remember: every sentence must end with one of these three marks. Now you know how to use end punctuation like a real writer!
