Sound happens when something vibrates. That means it shakes back and forth very fast. You might not always see it, but it is happening!

When something vibrates and makes a sound, that sound can travel through the air. When it reaches another thing, it can make that thing vibrate too!

When you pluck a guitar string, it shakes very fast. That shaking is called vibrating. The vibrating string makes a sound you can hear.

  • Plastic wrap (to stretch over the top)

What to do:

  • Put a few grains of rice or tiny paper bits on top of the plastic wrap.
  • Hold the metal pot close to the bowl (but do not touch it!).
  • Bang the pot with the spoon. Watch the rice!

We did not touch the wrap or the rice. But the sound made it move! Sound can make other things vibrate.
