People have always noticed that babies look like their parents. A long time ago, farmers saw that baby animals looked a lot like their moms and dads. But they also saw that each baby was a little bit different! Scientists wanted to find out why.
Here is the big question we will answer: How are baby plants and animals the same as their parents, and how are they different?

See the Differences!
Let's look at a picture of a parent cat and her kittens. Can you see what is the same? Can you see what is different? Look at the colors and the patterns on each one.
Did you notice that all three kittens look like cats? They all have pointy ears, tails, and whiskers. Those are traits they share with their parent. But each kitten has a different fur pattern. That is a difference between the offspring and the parent. When we look carefully and write these things down, we are doing what real scientists do — we are recording data and looking for patterns across many offspring!
How Do Babies Get Their Traits?
Every baby gets instructions from its parents. These instructions tell the baby how to grow. A baby duck gets instructions that say "grow a beak" and "grow feathers." That is why baby ducks look like ducks, not like fish!
But the instructions can mix together in different ways. That is why baby animals are similar but not exactly the same as their parents. Think of mixing paint colors. If you mix blue and yellow, you get green. But you might get a lighter green or a darker green each time!
What Traits Can We Observe?
When we compare parents and offspring, we look at different traits. A trait is something you can see or measure. Here are some traits you can look for in animals and plants.

What Happens as Offspring Grow?
