How Light Helps You See

In the picture, yellow arrows show the light going from the sun to the toy. Then blue arrows show the light bouncing from the toy to your eyes. Your eyes catch the light, and your brain says, "I see a toy!" Without the sun's light, none of this can happen.

What Happens Step by Step

Seeing an object is not magic. It happens in steps! Here is what happens every time you see something.

The Three Steps of Seeing

  1. Step 1: A light source makes light. It could be the sun, a lamp, or a flashlight.
  2. Step 2: The light travels and hits an object, like a book or a cat. The light bounces off the object.
  3. Step 3: The bounced light goes into your eyes. Your brain figures out what you are seeing!

If you take away the light source, step 1 does not happen. That means step 2 and step 3 cannot happen either. No light means you cannot see the object, even if it is right in front of you!

Put a toy in a closet. Close the door so it is very dark. Can you see the toy? Now open the door a little to let light in. What happens? The toy did not move, but now you can see it! That proves light is needed to see.

Where Does Light Come From?

There are many things that make light. We call them light sources. Some are found in nature and some are made by people. Let's look at some examples!

The left side shows light sources that make their own light. The right side shows objects that do not make light. Those objects need light shining on them for us to see them.

A rock, a book, a ball, and a chair do not make light. You can only see them when light shines on them. A flashlight, a lamp, and the sun all make their own light. That is why we call them light sources.
