How Light Helps You See
Look at the picture below. It shows how light travels from a light source, bounces off a toy, and goes to your eyes. This is how you see things every day!
In the picture, yellow arrows show the light going from the sun to the toy. Then blue arrows show the light bouncing from the toy to your eyes. Your eyes catch the light, and your brain says, "I see a toy!" Without the sun's light, none of this can happen.
What Happens Step by Step
Seeing an object is not magic. It happens in steps! Here is what happens every time you see something.
The Three Steps of Seeing
- Step 1: A light source makes light. It could be the sun, a lamp, or a flashlight.
- Step 2: The light travels and hits an object, like a book or a cat. The light bounces off the object.
- Step 3: The bounced light goes into your eyes. Your brain figures out what you are seeing!
If you take away the light source, step 1 does not happen. That means step 2 and step 3 cannot happen either. No light means you cannot see the object, even if it is right in front of you!
