What's Happening?
Have you ever tried to drink soup with a fork? It doesn't work very well! The soup falls right through the holes.
But a spoon holds the soup perfectly. You can scoop it up and bring it to your mouth. The spoon was designed โ that means someone thought about the problem and made something to help!
- Why does the spoon work better than the fork for soup?
- What about the spoon's shape helps it do its job?
Big Ideas
People have problems every day. Sometimes we need to carry water. Sometimes we need to stay dry in the rain. Sometimes we need to see in the dark.
When people design something, that means they think about a problem and make something to fix it. The shape and parts of the design help it do its job. This is called structure and function. That means the way something is built helps it work!
A Design Solves a Problem
Shape Matters
Let's Try It!
What we need: Your eyes and your brain! ๐ง
- Look at the picture below. It shows three tools.
- Think about what problem each tool solves.
- Look at the shape of each tool. How does the shape help it work?
Look at each tool. The shape of each one helps it solve a problem. The umbrella is wide on top. The bucket is deep and has a handle. The flashlight points light where you need it.
What We Found Out
When we looked at the tools, we noticed something important. Each tool has a special shape or special parts that help it do its job.
The umbrella is wide and curved on top. That shape catches the rain so it slides off to the side. If the umbrella were flat like a plate, the rain would pool on top and drip on you!
The bucket is deep with no holes. That holds the water inside. The handle lets you carry it. Without the handle, the bucket would be very hard to move!
Every design starts with a problem. Then someone thinks about what shape and parts would help. Then they build it. That's how a design helps solve a human problem!
Do You See the Pattern?
Let's look for a pattern. A pattern is when something happens the same way again and again.
Look at these designs. The shape of each thing helps it do its job. This pattern is called structure and function. That means the way something is built (its structure) helps it work (its function).
| Design | Shape (Structure) | How It Helps (Function) |
|---|---|---|
| ๐ฅ Spoon | Curved like a little bowl | Holds soup and liquids |
| โ๏ธ Umbrella | Wide and round on top | Blocks rain from above |
| ๐ฅพ Rain boots | Tall with no holes | Keeps feet dry in puddles |
| ๐ Backpack | Big pouch with straps | Carries things on your back |
Do you see the pattern? Every time the shape of something matches the problem it needs to solve. This pattern works in nature too!
A bird's beak has a shape that helps it eat. A fish has fins shaped to help it swim. Even in nature, structure helps with function!
People Use Science to Help!
People who design things are called engineers. Engineers look at problems and think of ways to fix them. They use what they know about shapes and materials to build helpful things.
Here are some real designs that help people every day:
๐ฒ Bicycle Helmet
๐งค Winter Mittens
Can you think of a problem you have? Maybe it's hard to reach something high. Maybe your toys get mixed up. What shape could you design to help? You can think like an engineer too! ๐
