Why Do We Care About Light and Materials?

People have always wondered about light. Long ago, people noticed that some things let light through and some things blocked it. Think about a window and a wall. You can see through a window, but not through a wall!

Scientists learned that different materials (the stuff things are made of) do different things to light. This helped people build amazing things like glasses, sunglasses, and windows!

Here is the big question: How can we sort materials into groups based on what they do to light?

Three Groups of Materials

When light hits something, one of three things can happen. The light can go all the way through, some of the light can go through, or none of the light can go through. We use three special words to describe these groups.

Transparent

Transparent means light goes all the way through. You can see clearly through transparent things. Examples: clear glass, clean water, clear plastic wrap.

Translucent

Translucent means some light goes through, but not all. Things look blurry or fuzzy. Examples: wax paper, frosted glass, thin cloth.

Opaque

Opaque means no light goes through at all. You cannot see through opaque things. Examples: a book, a wooden door, a brick wall.

See How Light Moves Through Materials

Look at the picture above. The sun sends out light (the yellow lines). When the light hits clear glass, all the light goes through. The happy face can see clearly! When light hits wax paper, only some light gets through. Things look blurry. When light hits a wood block, no light gets through at all!

How Does Light Work With Materials?

Light travels in straight lines from a source like the sun or a flashlight. When light reaches a material, the material does something to the light. Let's learn about the three things that can happen.

Light Can Pass Through

When light hits a transparent material, the light keeps going straight through. It is like walking through an open door. Nothing stops you!

Light Can Get Scattered

When light hits a translucent material, some light gets through but it bounces around inside. That is why things look blurry or fuzzy. It is like trying to see through a shower curtain.

Light Can Be Blocked

When light hits an opaque material, the light stops. None of it gets through. It is like running into a closed door. You cannot pass! This is also why opaque things make shadows. The dark shadow behind the object is where the light cannot reach.

Your hand is opaque! Hold your hand up to a bright light. You can see a shadow on the other side because your hand blocks the light. But if you hold a thin piece of paper up to the same light, you might see a little glow. That paper is translucent!

Sorting Materials Into Groups

Now that we know the three groups, let's look at lots of materials and sort them! When scientists sort things into groups, they call it classifying. We are going to classify materials by what they do to light.

This sorting chart shows everyday materials placed into three groups. We test each material by shining a flashlight through it and looking at what happens on the other side.

To classify a material, you can do a simple test. Shine a flashlight at the material. Then look at the other side. Can you see the light clearly? It is transparent. Can you see a fuzzy glow? It is translucent. Can you see no light at all? It is opaque!

Imagine you have a flashlight and three things from your kitchen: a clear glass of water, a piece of aluminum foil, and a paper towel. Let's figure out which group each one belongs in!
