Shapes are everywhere, and they help things do their jobs!
People have used shapes to build things for a long, long time. A shape is how something looks on the outside.
Think about a ball. It is round! That round shape helps it roll. Let's see how people learned about shapes over time.
Here is our big question: How does the shape of something help it do its job? Let's find out together!
Let's look at our anchoring phenomenon. That means a real thing we can watch and wonder about.
The dome shape makes rain slide off. A flat shape would hold water on top! The shape helps the umbrella do its job.
Let's look at a picture! It shows different shapes and what they help things do.
Look at the picture above. Can you find the round shape? What about the pointy one? Each shape has a special job it does best!
Let's think about how shapes help things work. We will look at two examples.
A cup is shaped like a bowl with tall sides. The sides go up around the bottom. This shape holds water inside!
If a cup were flat like a plate, the water would spill everywhere. The tall, curved sides keep the water in.
A slide at the playground is a long, smooth slope. That means it goes down at an angle. The sloped shape helps you go down fast and have fun!
If a slide were flat, you would just sit there. The shape makes it work!
Let's look at more shapes and what jobs they do. This picture shows an umbrella model. Remember our phenomenon? The dome shape makes rain slide off!
| Shape | What It Does | Example Object |
|---|---|---|
| ๐ต Round | Rolls and spins | Ball, wheel |
| ๐บ Pointy | Pokes and digs | Pencil tip, nail |
| ๐ช Flat | Stacks and holds | Book, box |
| ๐ฅฃ Curved | Scoops and holds | Spoon, bowl |
| ๐ Long and thin | Reaches and pushes | Stick, straw |
Now let's build a model together! A model is something you make to show how a thing works. We will make a model of a boat.
Great job! You just built a model. Your model showed that the bowl shape helps a boat float. You are thinking like an engineer!
Not every shape works for every job. Let's see which shapes are good at different things!
| Job | Good Shape โ | Not-So-Good Shape โ |
|---|---|---|
| Rolling down a hill | Round (ball) | Flat (book) |
| Holding soup | Curved (bowl) | Flat (plate) |
| Stacking on a shelf | Flat (box) | Round (ball) |
| Popping a balloon | Pointy (pin) | Round (marble) |
Now you know a lot about shapes! As you grow, you will learn even more about how engineers design things by choosing the right shapes.
| What You Know Now ๐ | What You'll Learn Later ๐ |
|---|---|
| Shapes help things work. | You can test many shapes to find the best one. |
| You can build a model. | You can draw plans before you build. |
| You can test your model. | You can measure and compare your tests. |
Look around your house or school today. Can you find three things where the shape helps the object do its job? You are already thinking like an engineer!
