Sound Devices

When you talk, your voice makes the air vibrate. A sound device catches those vibrations and sends them far away. A cup-and-string phone is a sound device. A drum is also a sound device. When you hit a drum, it vibrates very loudly, and people far away can hear it.

Light Devices

Let's Build a Cup-and-String Phone!

Now it is time to build! Follow these steps to make your own cup-and-string phone. You will need 2 paper cups, a long piece of string, and 2 paper clips.

Step 1 — Poke a HoleAsk a grown-up to help you poke a small hole in the bottom of each paper cup. Use a pencil or a small nail. The hole should be just big enough for the string to fit through.
Both cups now have a small hole in the bottom.

Step 2 — Thread the StringPush one end of the string through the hole in the first cup. Push the other end through the hole in the second cup. The string should go through from the outside to the inside of each cup.
The string now connects the two cups.

Step 3 — Tie the Paper ClipsTie a paper clip to each end of the string inside the cups. This stops the string from sliding back out of the hole. The paper clip acts like a little anchor!

Step 4 — Pull the String TightGive one cup to your friend. Walk apart until the string is stretched tight. Do not let the string touch the ground or anything else. It must be tight and straight!
