Summer Learning: Bridging the Gap to 8th Grade Math equips students with essential skills for success in their upcoming math courses, focusing on functions, equations, and number systems. Participants will develop a strong understanding of linear relationships and gain proficiency in manipulating expressions involving roots. By the end of this course, students will be well-prepared to tackle more advanced mathematical concepts.

Slope and Linear Relationships

  • Calculate the slope of a line from a graph or two points — rise over run
  • Interpret slope as a rate of change in real-world scenarios
  • Understand the relationship between slope and the steepness of a line

Functions

  • Define and identify functions using various representations — equations, graphs, tables
  • Distinguish between functions and relations
  • Apply the vertical line test to determine if a graph represents a function
  • Work with input-output tables to evaluate functions for given values — domain and range

Linear Equations and Slope-Intercept Form

  • Express linear equations in slope-intercept form (y = mx + b)
  • Identify the slope and y-intercept from an equation in slope-intercept form
  • Graph linear equations using the slope and y-intercept
  • Explore special cases of linear equations — horizontal and vertical lines

Square and Cube Roots

  • Define square roots and cube roots as inverse operations of squaring and cubing
  • Simplify expressions involving square roots and cube roots
  • Estimate the values of roots and approximate their location on a number line
  • Solve simple equations involving square roots and cube roots

Connecting Lines and Equations

  • Derive linear equations from the graph of a line
  • Write equations given a slope and y-intercept or two points
  • Understand how different forms of linear equations relate to each other
  • Convert between various forms to solve problems

Real-World Applications

  • Apply linear equations to solve practical problems
  • Model real-world situations with linear functions and equations
  • Interpret the meaning of solutions in the context of the problem
  • Analyze scenarios where linear models are applicable
