Summer Learning: Bridging the Gap to 7th Grade Math prepares students for success in their upcoming math courses by building a solid foundation in number theory, exponents, algebraic expressions, and equation-solving techniques. Through interactive sessions and practical exercises, students will develop confidence and proficiency in essential pre-algebra concepts, setting them up for a smooth transition to seventh-grade mathematics.

Prime Factorization and Number Theory

  • Identify prime numbers and composite numbers—understanding their fundamental properties
  • Master prime factorization—breaking down numbers into their prime factors
  • Apply prime factorization to solve problems involving greatest common factors (GCF) and least common multiples (LCM)

Exponents and Powers

  • Understand the concept of exponents as repeated multiplication—grasping the relationship between base and exponent
  • Evaluate powers of ten—recognizing patterns and simplifying calculations
  • Express numbers in exponential form—converting repeated multiplication into a concise notation
  • Work with negative bases and exponents—extending the concept to a broader range of numbers

Expressions vs. Equations

  • Differentiate between mathematical expressions and equations—understanding the role of the equal sign
  • Identify variables in expressions and equations—recognizing their significance as unknown quantities
  • Translate word problems into algebraic expressions and equations—modeling real-world situations mathematically

Solving One-Variable Equations

  • Master the properties of equality—understanding how to manipulate equations while maintaining balance
  • Solve one-step equations using inverse operations—isolating the variable to find its value
  • Solve multi-step equations—combining like terms and applying the distributive property
  • Utilize algebra tiles as a visual tool—modeling and solving equations concretely

Two-Variable Equations

  • Graph two-variable equations on the coordinate plane—visualizing the relationship between variables
  • Identify solutions to two-variable equations—determining ordered pairs that satisfy the equation
  • Create tables of values for two-variable equations—generating ordered pairs for graphing

Sequences: Arithmetic and Geometric

  • Recognize arithmetic sequences—identifying patterns of constant addition or subtraction
  • Recognize geometric sequences—identifying patterns of constant multiplication or division
  • Determine the next term in a sequence—extending patterns to predict future values

Introduction to Slope

  • Understand the concept of slope as a measure of steepness—interpreting its meaning in graphical and real-world contexts
  • Calculate slope from a graph—determining the rise over run
  • Calculate slope from two points—applying the formula to find the rate of change
