Summer Learning: Bridging the Gap to 2nd Grade Math provides rising second-grade students with a fun and engaging review of essential math concepts to prevent summer learning loss and build confidence for the upcoming school year. Through interactive sessions, students will reinforce their understanding of place value, master addition and subtraction, learn to tell time, and develop a foundational understanding of money. By the end of this course, students will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in second-grade math.

Addition and Subtraction

  • Review single-digit and double-digit addition and subtraction — strengthen math fact fluency.
  • Practice adding and subtracting two- and three-digit numbers — both with and without regrouping ("carrying the one" or "borrowing the one").
  • Apply strategies for counting up or counting backward to solve subtraction problems.

Place Value

  • Identify the value of digits in the ones, tens, and hundreds places.
  • Represent numbers using standard form (digits), expanded form, and word form.
  • Build numbers based on their word form or expanded form representations.

Telling Time

  • Identify the hour and minute hands on an analog clock.
  • Tell time to the hour and half-hour.
  • Represent time using digital clock format — including understanding and using a colon.

Money

  • Identify and count U.S. coins — pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
  • Determine the value of a collection of coins.
  • Solve simple word problems involving money.

Problem-Solving Strategies

  • Apply critical thinking skills to solve math problems.
  • Interpret word problems and identify the relevant information.
  • Choose appropriate strategies for solving different types of problems.

Real-World Applications

  • Connect math concepts to everyday situations.
  • Use math skills to solve real-world problems related to time and money.
  • Enhance mathematical literacy through practical examples.

Math Vocabulary

  • Reinforce key math vocabulary terms such as "digit," "place value," "sum," "difference," and "value."
  • Use correct math terminology to explain and justify solutions.
  • Improve understanding of mathematical language.
