Jump Start to AP Statistics provides a comprehensive introduction to statistical analysis, equipping students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for success in AP Statistics and beyond. Students will learn to apply statistical methods to real-world data, interpret results, and effectively communicate findings using industry-standard tools and techniques, culminating in a solid understanding of statistical inference and its applications.

Descriptive Statistics and Data Visualization

  • Calculate measures of central tendency — mean, median, mode
  • Compute measures of dispersion — standard deviation, variance, range, interquartile range (IQR)
  • Create and interpret histograms, boxplots, scatterplots, and other graphical displays
  • Analyze and describe distributions based on shape, center, spread, and outliers

Normal Distribution and Z-Scores

  • Understand the properties of the normal distribution — symmetry, bell-shaped curve
  • Calculate and interpret z-scores — measure of standard deviations from the mean
  • Use z-tables to determine probabilities associated with normal distributions
  • Apply the empirical rule (68-95-99.7 rule) to estimate probabilities

Probability and Random Variables

  • Understand basic probability concepts — independent events, conditional probability
  • Work with random variables — discrete and continuous
  • Calculate expected value and standard deviation of random variables

Sampling Distributions and the Central Limit Theorem

  • Understand the concept of a sampling distribution
  • Apply the Central Limit Theorem — for sample means and sample proportions
  • Calculate standard error of the mean and standard error of the proportion

Confidence Intervals

  • Construct and interpret confidence intervals for population means — using t-distributions when appropriate
  • Construct and interpret confidence intervals for population proportions
  • Determine the margin of error and sample size requirements

Hypothesis Testing

  • Formulate null and alternative hypotheses
  • Conduct hypothesis tests for population means — one-sample and two-sample t-tests
  • Conduct hypothesis tests for population proportions — one-sample and two-sample z-tests
  • Calculate and interpret p-values — assess the strength of evidence against the null hypothesis
  • Understand Type I and Type II errors — and their consequences

Regression Analysis

  • Create and interpret scatterplots to assess relationships between variables
  • Calculate and interpret the correlation coefficient — measure of linear association
  • Determine the least-squares regression line
  • Interpret the slope and y-intercept of the regression line
  • Assess the fit of the regression model — using R-squared and residual plots
