High School Biology Fundamentals provides a comprehensive introduction to the core principles of biology, emphasizing the structure and function of essential biomolecules and the central dogma of molecular biology. Students will gain a solid foundation in protein and enzyme structures, and the mechanisms of transcription and translation, setting the stage for more advanced studies in biology and related fields. By the end of this course, students will be able to describe the key processes that enable cells to synthesize proteins from DNA.

Macromolecules and Functional Groups

  • Understand the fundamental building blocks of life—macromolecules like proteins.
  • Explore the properties of key functional groups—amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl—and how they contribute to molecular behavior.

Amino Acids and Protein Structure

  • Learn the structure and classification of the 20 essential amino acids.
  • Understand the role of R-groups in determining the unique properties of each amino acid.
  • Grasp the concept of essential vs. non-essential amino acids—dietary requirements vs. endogenous production.
  • Explore peptide bond formation—linking amino acids into polypeptide chains.
  • Analyze protein directionality—from N-terminus to C-terminus.

Protein Functions and Enzymes

  • Examine the diverse roles of proteins—enzymes, structural components, transport, communication, and defense.
  • Investigate enzyme function—catalyzing biological reactions.

DNA Replication

  • Understand DNA structure—the double helix and complementary base pairing (A-T, C-G).
  • Explore the process of DNA replication—unwinding and synthesis of new strands.

Transcription: DNA to RNA

  • Learn the central dogma of molecular biology—DNA → RNA → Protein.
  • Understand the process of transcription—converting DNA sequences into messenger RNA (mRNA).
  • Identify key players in transcription—mRNA and RNA polymerase.

RNA Structure and Function

  • Differentiate between DNA and RNA—single-stranded vs. double-stranded, ribose vs. deoxyribose.
  • Examine base pairing in RNA—adenine (A) pairs with uracil (U).
  • Explore the role of mRNA—carrying genetic information from the nucleus to ribosomes.

Translation: RNA to Protein

  • Understand the process of translation—converting mRNA sequences into amino acid sequences.
  • Recognize the role of ribosomes in protein synthesis.
  • Connect transcription and translation—how DNA ultimately dictates protein structure and function.
